ANCIM (National Association of Minor Island Municipalities) was officially founded on June 8, 1986 on the island of Giglio. It represents 36 municipalities with over 200,000 residents, a number that is known to grow to millions during the summer season.
The challenge of the 36 small Island Municipalities
- to overcome marginalization;
- to overcome gaps linked to insularity: education – social health system – infrastructures (tangible and intangible) – transportation.
- to overcome development practices focused almost exclusively on tourism through the valuation of social-cultural traditions and quality characteristic products;
- to overcome fractionated development efforts in the 36 municipalities to recover the strength of common and integrated actions.
